A little about- Eid Al- Fitr
Eid Mubarak- Often we hear this word during Eid. To greet each other on Eid day, they use the term “ Mubarak” which means blessed or celebrations. So, it is a prayer used by Muslims to wish friends and family while exchanging greetings.
The five pillars of Islam religion are faith, prayer, charity, making a pilgrimage to Mecca and Ramadan. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar marks the beginning of fasting in which people don’t eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. It is the month where the spiritual life of Islamic followers is reflected and brings a person closer to the almighty. With the end of Ramadan and fasting period, comes the festival of Eid al-Fitr. There is no fixed date for Ramadan as the celebration depends upon the moon sightings. The date of Eid is based on the lunar cycles.
The celebrations of Eid last for three days. Prayers are chanted during these days. Many people attend communal prayers and listen to sermons on the first day of the month of Shawwal which is held outside or in large venues. Some people arrange communal meals on these special occasions. The Eid day is declared as a public holiday in most of the countries. People travel a long distance to offer prayers during this time. Some people wear new clothes and make festive meals to share with friends and family.
Eid Al Adha
Eid Al Adha is known as the festival of sacrifice that marks the readiness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son out of faith in Allah. The Almighty has asked Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son but was then intervened by Angel Jibreel to stop. Muslims all over the world celebrate this event by sacrificing animals and divide it into three parts – the family retains one-third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends, and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy.
Eid Al Adha is celebrated on the 10th of Zul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
